Recovering from Shoulder Avascular Necrosis Surgery

Initially following surgery, you will be placed in a sling for 2 weeks. Physical therapy will begin at 2 weeks post-op.

During this period, you will begin physical therapy and gradually increase the range of motion exercises. You will work on strengthening exercises to regain muscle tone and stability around the shoulder. You will discontinue the use of the sling at 2 weeks post-op, unless instructed otherwise by Dr. Chahla and his team.

Physical therapy will continue with a focus on regaining strength, stability, and function. You may begin to resume some light activities and sports under the guidance of Dr. Chahla and your physical therapist.

Most patients can expect significant improvement in their shoulder’s strength and range of motion during this phase. Full recovery is typically during this time once full strength has been restored. Ongoing exercises and rehabilitation are essential to optimize recovery and minimize the risk of re-injury.

Recovery from shoulder AVN surgery depends on the procedure performed. Patients typically undergo physical therapy, gradual mobility exercises, and strengthening programs to restore function and prevent stiffness. Dr. Jorge Chahla provides expert post-surgical care to help patients recover safely and efficiently. If you are recovering from shoulder AVN surgery, contact Dr. Chahla’s office in Chicago, Naperville, or Oak Brook for personalized rehabilitation guidance.
